What’s a shadow?
Your shadow consists of the characteristics of yourself that you believe are socially unacceptable, either through conscious or unconscious conditioning.
Most often what shows up in our Shadow is the stuff we don’t love about ourselves.
We try to hide, deny and suppress our shadow in order to continue to look “good” to the outside world. But sometimes the traits that we don’t want to acknowledge are actually positive. Instead of claiming them as our own, we project them onto others because it’s more socially acceptable to give praise to other people than it is to praise yourself.
Shadow is neither good nor bad. It simply is, and it's a part of being human.
Shadow is only dangerous when it's been ignored for too long. When we spend our whole lives trying to shove our Shadow down, eventually it tries to resurface, and often in unpleasant ways (heyyy inappropriate outbursts or sudden emotional breakdowns that make no logical sense).
When we own and acknowledge all the aspects of ourselves, we have the freedom to choose how we want to show up in the world. Options make us more powerful, and more adept to handle life’s many curves.
